What’s the Difference Between Ducted and Ductless Heat Pumps?

If you’re shopping around for a new heat pump, you may be wondering about the difference between the ducted and ductless options. Which one is going to work better for your home and family? The answer is, it depends.

We’re going to highlight the pros and cons of both ducted heat pumps and ductless heat pumps below so that you can make an educated decision when purchasing your next unit. You can give our team a call to schedule a heat pump service in Mooresville and we can help you make the best decision. In the meantime, keep reading to learn more about the similarities and differences between different types of heat pumps.

How a Ducted Heat Pump Works

A ducted heat pump is very similar to a central air conditioner. It uses refrigerant to cool your home down in the summer by removing heat from the air. It connects to a series of ductwork in either your attic or basement that blows conditioned air into the rooms of your home via strategically placed vents.

But a heat pump is also different from a central air conditioner in that it can move refrigerant in the opposite direction to absorb heat from the outside and bring it into your home. A heat pump is basically an air conditioner and heater all in one single system. It eliminates the need for a separate heater or air conditioner, potentially saving you some space in your home where a second unit would need to be stored.

The Ductless Difference

Ductless heat pumps work very similarly, although there is no ductwork involved. Just like the name implies, a ductless heat pump has individual units installed in the rooms of your home with no ductwork connected. Instead, heated or cooled air blows directly into your home without needing to travel through ductwork.

This type of system is unique because it allows you to select different temperature settings for each room of your house. Just keep your doors closed and each room can maintain its own unique temperature. This is a great benefit if you have family members who enjoy their space a little warmer or cooler than the rest of the family.

Ducted heat pumps are already considered very efficient and the ductless models even more so. A ductless heat pump does not stand the chance of losing any conditioned air inside of the ductwork since there is none. In fact, if you invest in a ductless mini split you stand to save up to half on your monthly energy costs for heating and cooling.

How to Choose a Heat Pump

It really comes down to your preference on whether you would like to install a ductless or ducted heat pump. Both units are excellent choices. If you’re looking to save more upfront on installation, a ducted heat pump is the way to go. If you don’t mind spending a little bit more and installation, a ductless heat pump is the way to go because you will save so much money over the life of the unit on energy costs.
