R-22 vs. R-410A: Do I Need to Switch?

Lately, there has been a lot of talk in the HVAC industry about refrigerant. As a homeowner, it’s important that you understand the basic issues and how they will affect your home cooling and heating needs. Read on for Canella’s advice on R-410A refrigerant and your air conditioner.

What is R-22?

Your air conditioner uses a fluid called refrigerant to move warm air out of the home in order to keep it cool. There are different types of refrigerant, but for decades the kind most commonly found in residential systems was R-22. However, R-22, often called Freon, is not the industry standard that it once was. R-22 has been found to be harmful to the ozone layer. Therefore, its production will be completely banned in the U.S. by 2020. At that point, the price of any remaining supplies of R-22 will have skyrocketed.

R-410A: The better HVAC refrigerant

Instead of dealing with the constantly rising costs of R-22, homeowners in Hickory should consider switching to an R-410A air conditioner. R-410A is less harmful to the environment and far more efficient than R-22. And the best part? It’s not going anywhere any time soon. If you’re unsure about paying for a brand new AC unit, then consider a few factors. With R-22, you’ll have to continuously search for reliable supplies that steadily grow more expensive. In addition, R-22 is less efficient, so your equipment will need more repairs. Compare that to an R-410A system that has lower costs for refrigerant, maintenance and energy usage, and the choice is clear. An R-410A system will last you for years to come.
